In partnership with Refinery29 , we follow the dating diary of a brand new Match member — from choosing the perfect profile picture, to messaging matches, to dealing with first date nerves. So I decided to take the plunge and try Match. Flanked by my friends Lily and Sara, I start my subscription to Match. First we choose my pictures.
Lily and Sara plough ruthlessly through my Instagram posts, embarrassing Facebook photos and hundreds of iPhone selfies. My philosophy is less is more, so my description reads simply : cheese and red wine. Lily and Sara are chomping at the bit to start looking for potential future husbands, so we up the pace.
Am I ready for a relationship? Yes, please. As my views, winks and favourites increase, I get a big ego boost.

The dating term dictionary keeps growing. But all of these phrases aim to serve a purpose — to offer us clarity into the hectic world of love and courtship and possibly explain why your Hinge match ghosted. Coined by Patia Braithwaite for SELF, whelming is what happens when your dating app match randomly tells you just how exhausted and overwhelmed they are by all of their matches on the platform, or their dating lives in general. But Braithwaite, and a number of her friends, have experienced it firsthand.
And yes, of course people can be stressed out by the amount of matches or messages they may receive on a dating app. The act of whelming draws some comparison to negging. Are they real? Oh, they look nice anyway. While whelming is not as actively harmful, it may cause the person on the receiving end to feel a little bit badly about themselves, or to feel less important.
Just be on the lookout if that behavior translates over to your real-life relationship with this person — then it may be a sign of a red flag.

For the uninitiated, negging is a weird pick-up tactic from the early aughts where someone approaches you and, instead of just being friendly or talking to you like a human , they give you a backhanded compliment. The idea is to bring your confidence down a bit, which is somehow meant to make you more interested in the person doing the negging. If this all sounds like a terrible way to be wooed , hold on to your smartphones, friends.
Whelming is what happens when my matches spontaneously lament about how overwhelmed they are by their other matches instead of, you know, flirting with me.
