First Dates is a popular, long-running and heart-warming series that takes an entertaining obs-doc approach to dating, inviting viewers to take an intimate peek.
As social media and apps have taken over dating, the whole process has become more and more mediated. Setting up a dating profile requires curating and selling yourself like a brand or a reality TV character. And daters often google each other and check out Instagrams before meeting up. One would think that these shifts would prompt reality dating shows to organically update themselves for the times. Instead, somehow, the genre has just leaned back into the conventional and retro.
But then there is the quietly subversive Dating Around. The reality show premiered on Netflix last year, and the second season just came out last weekend. Both seasons consist of six bingeable episodes, in each of which a protagonist goes on five dates. The dates are seamlessly edited together in a way that almost feels like a short story. There are no talking-head interviews spelling out motivations; you just have to read faces and cues.
Though it masqueraded as low-key and unfussy, a show that simply eavesdropped on blind dates, its approach was more high-concept than it first appeared. One person went on five dates, then chose their favourite for a second date. So far, so familiar. But the editing made it all look as if it took place on the same night, in a sort of hopeful-romantic Groundhog Day.
And so each date took place at the same place, in the same clothes, often with the same questions and jokes. These were edited to look as if they were all happening at once, and it was borderline arthouse.
Strangers go on blind dates in a unique restaurant in which everyone is on a first date.
Looking for love is far from easy. Sometimes it can feel like you’re doing it all wrong. But one British reality dating show is bringing joy, laughter, and even the odd tear, to viewers by showing the more human side to first dates. Set in a restaurant in the heart of London, Channel 4’s First Dates allows viewers to eavesdrop on real-life blind dates. Of course, there’s crippling nerves, wardrobe malfunctions, excruciating silences and table manner slip-ups.
But, it’s so much more than just a spectacle of hilarious encounters. With each date featured on the show now in its eighth season you hear people’s backstories, and you find out why, for some people, going on a date is a huge milestone.

First dates can be hard enough for people who stammer. Imagine being filmed for a television programme whilst on one! Participants know nothing about the date they have been set up with other than what they look like, from an emailed photograph. I found out about it via a link on the BSA Facebook page , saying that Channel 4 were looking for people who stammer to audition. Ten minutes later I had a phone call from one of the producers, Joe, who gave me a brief phone interview daunting I know, but Joe was very nice and made me relaxed as he knew I stammered.
He asked me about myself, what kind of girls I like and how my stammer affects me. He seemed really interested, and a few days later I got the call to go to London to audition. I was worried that I was going to come across as a bumbling, crying idiot and people were going to laugh at me. The audition was basically an extended filmed version of the phone interview, with a bit more emphasis on my stammer.
It was very relaxed and Joe was eager to get me on the show, and a week later I had confirmation that they wanted me.

Nowadays, watching two people go on an uncomfortable blind first date in a crowded bar feels kind of like visiting a history museum, observing a relic of days past. And as sad as that is, it also still makes for some good old voyeuristic fun. This time around, six New Orleans singles are sent on five blind dates each. Every episode follows one dater as they awkwardly make small talk, argue, or hit it off with their five matches, after which they must select one of their suitors who they deem worthy of a second date.
